What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

It usually means the switch is not interrupting power. The switch contacts may be stuck closed, the switch failed, or wiring is feeding the light constantly. On multi-location (3‑way) circuits, a miswired or failed switch can leave the light on. We troubleshoot and repair these issues the same day when possible.

  • Try the other switch if it’s a 3‑way.
  • If it’s a dimmer, turn fully off and back on.
  • If the switch feels hot or trips a breaker, stop and call.
